Alberta Services - Historical Resources Impact Assessment (HRIA):
- is conducted under an Alberta Archaeological Research Permit. Permits require 5 to 10 days to be processed.
- may consist of a literature review, site file search of previously recorded archaeological sites, discussion with aboriginal communities and/or private landowners with interests in the development area.
- includes a field assessment to revisit previously recorded archaeological sites, to identify archaeological resources within the development area and evaluate site significance of archaeological resources identified. During the assessment areas of moderate to very high archaeological potential will be subject to subsurface testing for the identification of
archaeological resources.
- may include the identification of planned and unplanned development related impacts to archaeological resources and recommends archaeological site impact mitigation.
- Pre-Construction HRIA: conducted prior to construction to allow for archaeological site avoidance or mitigation measures to minimize impact to archaeological resources.
- Post-Construction HRIA: conducted after construction to identify archaeological sites, to determine the level of impact sustained and recommend possible salvage measures if required.
- HRIA Reporting: are submitted to Alberta Culture and Community Spirit, Historic Resources Management Branch and the client.
